A word about New Zealand Wood
Almost a third of New Zealand is forested. The mountainous regions of the west coast of the South Island plays host to the largest area of New Zealand's indigenous trees.  The main indigenous species are beech, kauri, rimu, taraire and tawa.

The crown owns around 77% of the indigenous estate and does so for reasons of conservation (to protect the eco-system), scientific research and recreation. The other 23% is owned by private land owners who are required, by law, to maintain their estates to provide products and amenities in perpetuity.

So, clearly, there is little scope to produce goods from indigenous trees.  Indeed supplies of kauri wood are diminishing on a daily basis as production of goods from this source is limited to trees that have fallen by natural causes.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century the planted production forests of New Zealand have grown to around 1.7 million hectares.  This timber is dominated by the radiata pine.

Many of the products on this site are mainly made from kauri or rimu but get in quick because these resources are limited.
